Stewardship
The NWGAP Stewardship project began in 2009 with the goals of updating the protected areas inventory of northwestern states (WA, OR, ID, MT, WY) and of developing a seamless regional GIS layer to support a gap analysis of biodiversity protection.
GAP aggregated public and private protected areas data into a common format and, with the assistance of many partners, reviewed management plans to assign a measure of management intent to protect biodiversity (GAP Status Code).
You can view the resulting map of the Northwest's Protected Areas by GAP status by cli clicking this link. The northwest region is illustrated by GAP Status Code in Figure 2. The areas in green (GAP Status 1 and 2) are primarily managed for biodiversity protection and will serve as the base in the regional gap analysis of vertebrate species habitats and their habitats (coming soon).
